Choosing the right flake coverage influences adhesion, workflow efficiency and long-term floor performance.

When you’re planning an Ultra Flake® or Hyper Flake® application, the choice between a sparse broadcast and a full broadcast can significantly impact your results. While a sparse broadcast may appear faster and more economical on paper, a full broadcast provides a more predictable surface, improves top coat adhesion, and creates a smoother overall application process.

Here’s what every applicator should consider.

What Is the Difference Between Sparse and Full Flake Broadcasts?

Both approaches use the same materials, epoxy prime and base coats, followed by decorative flakes, but the coverage varies.

Lightly scattered flakes with a visible base coat between them. The floor shows more of the underlying epoxy layer.

Flakes applied until rejection. All gloss is eliminated, creating a uniform, fully covered surface that completely hides the base coat.

The simple difference in coverage changes how the floor performs, how the top coat bonds and how forgiving the application is.

Why Sparse Flake Coverage Is Harder to Apply Evenly

Sparse coverage requires every movement to be precise.

  • Uneven scatter is highly visible.
  • Inconsistent sections cannot be blended out.
  • Variation across the floor stands out once the top coat is applied.

This increases both the attention required and the risk of callbacks.

How Sparse Broadcasts Affect Long-Term Floor Wear

Sparse broadcasts leave more of the epoxy base coat exposed to wear. Over time, this will lead to patchy ageing across traffic paths, particularly on garage and workshop floors where tyres, oils, and moisture are common.

Benefits of a Full Flake Broadcast in Epoxy Flooring

Full Broadcast Improves Top Coat Bonding

When flakes completely cover the floor, the glossy epoxy beneath is no longer exposed. Top coats, such as polyaspartic or polyurethane, do not bond effectively to epoxy because its smooth, non-porous surface lacks the microtexture needed for a mechanical grip. The flakes create a textured, roughened surface that the top coat can “key” into, allowing it to adhere reliably.

The top coat bonds uniformly to the textured flake layer, reducing the risk of delamination while also supporting consistent film adhesion.

Full Broadcast Helps Achieve Consistent Visual Results

Full broadcasts are far more forgiving:

  • Coverage is naturally uniform.
  • Missed areas are easy to identify.
  • Blending is simpler.
  • The system hides substrate inconsistencies.

For applicators, this means fewer variables and a smoother process from start to finish.

Full Broadcasts Support Longer Lasting Floor Performance

A full broadcast layer protects the base coat from wear and produces a consistent visual profile across the entire floor. This is especially important in residential garages and commercial spaces, where uniform appearance matters.

When to Use a Sparse Flake Broadcast

Sparse broadcasts can be used for aesthetic effect when specified, particularly in feature spaces or where a terrazzo-style finish is required. Even then, extra care is needed to ensure proper sanding and adhesion.

For most Ultra Flake® and Hyper Flake® applications, a full broadcast aligns more closely with performance expectations and provides a smoother path to a high quality finish.

Ensuring a Professional Finish with the Right Broadcast Method

Selecting the correct flake coverage is one of the most important decisions for epoxy flooring applicators. A full broadcast not only simplifies the application process but also ensures top coat adhesion, consistent visual results, and long-term performance. By fully covering the base coat, you reduce the risk of uneven wear and create a floor that meets both aesthetic and functional expectations.
