When designing flooring systems for aircraft hangars, whether commercial or military, architects and engineers need to focus on safety, long-lasting performance, easy maintenance, and durability. The right floor keeps people and equipment safe while standing up to heavy use.

Key Considerations for Aircraft Hangar Flooring

Aircraft hangars endure heavy traffic, constant foot movement, and the weight and movement of large aircraft. These unique conditions make selecting the appropriate flooring system critical. The approach differs between commercial and military hangars due to variations in operational priorities.

Flooring for Commercial Aircraft Hangars

In commercial hangars, the focus is on easy maintenance and long-lasting performance. These facilities experience frequent aircraft movement for maintenance, repairs, or storage. While the floor does not require high slip resistance throughout, entrance and transition areas (where aircraft and personnel move between the hangar and tarmac) must remain slip resistant.

Commercial Hangar Flooring: 2-4mm GP Tinted Epoxy Matrix System includes:

  1. Prime and flood coat: EPO-HI GP Tinted Epoxy Resin applied to prepare the surface.
  2. Targeted silica sand broadcast: Adds texture and slip resistance where needed.
  3. Encapsulation flood coat: Covers the sand, creating a smooth 2–4mm build.
  4. Line markings: Two coats of EPO100L to define parking lines or clearway areas.
  5. Surface protection: Sanding with 180-grit discs, followed by a UV resistant top coat such as Sparta60®.

This creates a smooth, easy-to-clean surface that withstands heavy traffic and UV exposure.

Flooring for Military and Defence Hangars

Military hangars need floors that are slip-resistant, tough, and reliable. The surface must handle heavy aircraft and keep people safe in all conditions.

Industrial strength epoxy suitable for aircraft hangars

Military Hanger Flooring: 2-4mm GP Tinted Epoxy Matrix System includes:

  1. Prime and flood coat: EPO-HI® GP Tinted Epoxy as a strong, durable base.
  2. Full silica sand broadcast: Applied across the entire floor to ensure uniform slip resistance.
  3. Entrapment coat: Secures the sand to withstand heavy use.
  4. Line markings: Two coats of EPO100L for parking or operational lines.
  5. UV-resistant top coat: Sparta60® protects the surface and markings from wear and sun exposure.

This high-build system prioritises safety and longevity while accommodating the demanding conditions of military hangars.
